Coming to an understanding of The MindBody Syndrome (TMS) can be a big step forward in the healing journey.
TMS was initially proposed by Doctor John E. Sarno, who was a famous American back doctor.
Sarno’s book THE MINDBODY PRESCRIPTION details what TMS is, and you can get it from Amazon (there is a free sample available for you to download if you have Kindle!)
For many people suffering chronic conditions, grasping these principles and acting on them can be a really big part of recovering.
Learning about the underlying mechanism of TMS can help you learn how to reduce symptoms, allowing you to regain some control over your life.
Reading about TMS is a great step towards relief from chronic pain, ME/CFS, Longcovid, chronic anxiety, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, pots, back pain issues, digestion issues and ibs, and other chronic complex health conditions.
For Amari’s own journey, coming to an understanding of The Mindbody Syndrome was instrumental in recovering. She began to see the root cause of her symptoms and then could take action to change her responses, soon quickly able to avoid crashes and to reduce flare-ups.
The Sarno book The MindBody Prescription is a great way into understanding TMS.
Amari read this book by Dr Sarno and just this initial understanding (known as “knowledge therapy” by Sarno followers) took her from bedbound to 80% in a few weeks. It really was astonishing.
To say it was “a huge leap forward” is still an understatement.
Note: TMS here is used to stand for The Mindbody Syndrome. You may see TMS referred to in other places as “tension myositis syndrome”, also “tension myoneural syndrome” or “mindbody syndrome”, and it’s the same theory proposed by Dr John E. Sarno.
Some practitioners are also working with TMS and calling their approaches “Pain Reprocessing Therapy” and “Perceived Danger Response”. These approaches use Sarno’s theory and simplify it somewhat. They are also very helpful as a first stage to help dial down fear and begin to regulate the nervous system.
As an overall healing approach for chronic complex conditions, Amari mainly uses the TMS approach as originated by Sarno, and makes the principles actionable for you in your personalised recovery plan.
If you would like support with learning about and understanding TMS, or if you feel worried about being able to read and understand at this time, please don’t hesitate to book a coaching or healing session as this can be helpful to get you to an improved state where you will be able to start reading.
Well done for reading this. Perhaps now is a good time to listen to some soothing music…
